Jane and Clem Werner Scholarship
Jane and Clem Werner established their first scholarship fund with the Community Foundation. They paved the way for a new Foundation scholarship service in the community.
The Scholarship was established because Jane and Clem recognize that their academic education has made a significant impact on their lives. It gave them the foundation to build a secure life for themselves and their three children, Susan W. Thorsesen, Clemens A. (Cal) Werner, Jr., and Ann C. Werner.
Jane was born in Olean, NY and graduated from Smith College with a BA in Economics and a Minor in Art. Clem was born in Walcott, IA and graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in Political Science and a Juris Doctor Degree in Law. He has practiced law in Davenport, IA for over 50 years, including the last 25 years with his son, Cal. Academic education has been a part of their lives for years. Clem has been actively involved with the Nabstedt Foundation which makes loans to students for post-high school education. Jane has been a Candidate Committee member and Regional Chair for Smith College for 20 years.
By making an additional gift to their Fund five $5,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to deserving seniors from five local high schools. The Foundation is happy to receive this gift and to administer it in accordance with the terms of the agreement forever and ever.
