$424,000+ in scholarships to local scholars awarded through Community Foundation
Weeks before Claire Hamilton graduated from Luther College with bachelor’s degrees in environmental studies and French, she spent the weekend in the Quad Cities to speak with students receiving scholarships from the Quad Cities Community Foundation.
The 2015 graduate from Columbus Community High School talked about her college journey, from the uncertainty of what to study to discovering a passion for sustainability and travel. The recipient of the Don E. and Charlotte Williams Scholarship at the Community Foundation just four years earlier, the recurring financial support relieved some of the costs to attend school—and opened up the opportunity to dream about her future.
During Hamilton’s time at Luther, she built homes with Habitat for Humanity, researched water quality in the Upper Iowa River, studied pastoralism in Tanzania, and worked on a dairy farm in France. “Who would have thought a girl from small town rural Iowa could do all of that in four years?” she asked students, their parents and donors who make the scholarships possible at a celebration event honoring the 2019 scholarship recipients. “I sure didn’t, but through support, diligence and determination, I did all of those things. And I’m so grateful for those experiences.”
This year, more than $424,000 in scholarships were awarded to 43 Quad Cities-area students. Jean Moran, chairperson of the Quad Cities Community Foundation Board of Directors who has also reviewed scholarship applications for the past 10 years, reminded students that giving back—like Hamilton has done in her life—is an action that each one of this year’s scholarship recipients can take, in small and big ways, throughout their life.
“Ask yourself how you can take action, like so many of the donors and community members who make these scholarships possible have, to continue to transform our communities for the better,” Moran said.
